Welcome to destiny islands!
The starting off point for Kingdom Hearts was Destiny Islands, a place where children could adventure and explore all day with lack of parental supervision.
Sora can fight a younger version of Tidus, Wakka, or Selphie for experience and levels. He is also asked to find two sets of items (one to build a raft and one for supplies) for Kairi. After he gives each of these sets to her, a cutscene will ensue. After the Heartless appear, Sora goes to Riku's island to see Riku. Here Sora received the Keyblade in its default form, the Kingdom Key. Then, after battling swarms of Heartless, Sora was forced to face a Darkside Heartless amongst the remains of the islands.
When Destiny Islands were attacked by the darkness, Sora, Riku and Kairi were all separated. This is also where the main villain, Ansem, who is actually Xehanort, made his first appearance in the game, as a cloaked figure in the Secret Place.
Once they had reached End of the World, "Ansem" attempted to weaken Sora's resolve by fighting him in the remains of the Destiny Islands. "Ansem's" defeat caused the restoration of the islands as the door to darkness is closed. The event trapped Riku and King Mickey on the other side of the door while Kairi is left on the reforming Destiny Islands as Sora leaves her to find Riku.
Afterwards, Kairi wanders to the Secret Place (in a cave near the large tree) where the kids would draw on the walls. She notices one spot where she and Sora drew each other's heads facing each other as younger children. She notices that from the side where Sora's head was drawn, something was added. An extension of the arm handing a Paopu fruit (a fruit rumored to bond the destinies of the two who share it) to the drawing of Kairi's head. She could tell it was Sora's doing and drew in the same for the drawing of her head, her giving a Paopu fruit to Sora.
